Scarlett Johansson stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show last week to discuss her personal life and opened up about something she felt “ashamed” about when speaking with her 7-year-old daughter Rose Dorothy about her past. The Black Widow star, 37, told host Drew Barrymore that she used to smoke in her youth and stressed the importance of teaching her daughter to never follow in her footsteps.
“My daughter may have asked me this before. I used to smoke when I was younger and I’m so ashamed,” Johansson told Barrymore. “I just don’t want her to ever think that I ever thought it was cool ’cause she can never, ever, ever smoke,” she added. Johansson also acknowledged that if she tells her child (who she shares with ex-husband Roman Dauriac, 40) not to smoke, this might cause her to rebel and engage in things she was advised not to. This, Johansson said, is something she hopes that Rose “never figures out.”
The two-time Oscar nominee also talked about married life with her husband, Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, 39, and how she “knew him” before they were ever romantically involved but only began to think of him that way when she was “available.” Johansson explained that it was all about “timing,” and when the couple began dating in 2017 that they were both emotionally ready and falling in love.
During Johansson’s segment on the show, Barrymore showed Johansson a photo of Jost in high school with a middle-parted bowl cut. When asked if the Avengers actress would have given the then-Jost a chance in high school, she laughed and said, “no way,” since he had the “same haircut” as her brothers at the time.
Johansson and Jost dated two years before getting engaged in May 2019, married the following year in October 2020 and welcomed their first son (and Johansson’s second child), Cosmo, in August of 2021.
