You’ve probably heard about jailbroken phoned and thought: that sounds like freedom. The ability to customize your smartphone user experience is one of the reasons why some people choose to invest in a jailbroken phone, rather than a brand new straight-from-the-Apple-shop device. But tech experts say these phones are way more trouble than they are worth. This is the scary downside to buying a jailbroken phone that no one tells you about.

It isn’t all bad, of course. Tech users justify purchasing jailbroken phones time and again. “The biggest attraction in jailbroken phones is that you can download apps and tweaks that aren’t on Apple’s App Store,” says Tech Expert Hamna Amjad at Efani. “Plus, you get unlimited customization options to match your preferences. There is no doubt that buying a jailbroken iPhone gives you access to the plethora of hidden features on your iPhone, but it is definitely not worth it. Here are some reasons why.”

They’re Less Secure

“The jailbroken phones are less secure because they are without Apple's security protections, making them more vulnerable to nasty exploits and hackers,” Amjad says. “The potential security hole, bugs, and third-party apps compromise your device and put your data at risk.”

You Can’t Easily Update Your Phone

“Many people avoid or delay updating their phones because updating the firmware on the jailbroken iPhone reverses the jailbreak,” Amjad says. “However, it’s not at all wise to expose your phone to threats and malware just to enjoy installing a couple of banned apps.”

In addition to that, there are a few important apps(e.g. mobile banking apps) that can detect a jailbroken device and won't work properly, according to Amjad.

Kiss Your Apple Warranty Good-Bye

“The moment a device is jailbroken, its warranty becomes void. If something goes wrong with it, AppleStore may refuse to repair it,” says Amjad.

As enticing as they seem, it’s always best to stay far away from jailbroken iPhones and stick with phones that are covered by Apple.
