For such an expensive investment, it’s mind boggling how easily you can drop and break an iPhone. And while there are a number of highly rated phone cases that can protect the exterior of your phone, the same can’t be said for your actual phone battery. It takes a few tips and tricks to keep your phone working well and to ensure your battery lasts a long time. Miranda Yan, Founder of VinPit, spoke to SHEFinds.com about the scary mistake you could be making that’s destroying your iPhone — change this habit so that you won’t need to invest in a new phone sooner than necessary.
One of the biggest mistakes iPhone users make is incorrectly charging their phone’s battery. Believe it or not, there’s a right and wrong way to charge your device and, as Yan explains, these four battery mistakes can ruin your phone.
1. Don’t let your battery die
“Previously it was a good practice to let your battery fully die before charging because they used to be nickel-based,” Yan says. “But with today's lithium-based batteries, it is better to keep it charged than to do a ‘deep charge’ every once in a while. As a result, it can reduce your battery health and charge cycles.”
2. Don’t charge It full
“Keeping your phone fully charged to 100% is not a good practice,” Yan says. “Pushing your phone to extremes in either direction will cause wear and tear on the battery since it only has a finite number of charge cycles. A battery works best when kept between 40 and 80 percent.”
3. Don’t charge it overnight
“Don’t charge your phone overnight,” Yan says. “It may seem convenient and valuable to plugin when it’s time for lights out, but ever-changing your phone will heat it and can kill the battery quicker.”
4. Don’t use a battery backup case
“A phone case having a battery backup may seem handy,” Yan says. “But heat is terrible for a battery, and a phone case that doubles as a charger are both going to emit heat itself and cause the battery to warm up while charging. This will heavily damage your phone's internals and battery too.”
