No piece of candy represents Halloween better than candy corn. These tiny, tri-colored bite-sized sweets can we spotted in your local grocery store starting the first week of October, year after year. When it comes to opinions on this Halloween-themed candy, the verdict is split: you either love it or you hate it.

The 100+ Best New Beauty Launches Of 2024

If you are one of the candy corn lovers in the world, we don’t mean to kill your joy right before the holiday, but there’s something you should know about this candy.

While it should come as no surprise to you that candy corn isn’t exactly good for you -- it is candy after all -- this fake-looking vegetable is just a tiny bit more alarming than other candy varieties like chocolate.

The one scary reasons you should never, ever eat candy corn -- even though there are MANY -- is because it’s made with ingredients that are believed to be carcinogenic. Candy corn has food coloring in it (obviously), but even though these colorings are FDA-approved, they’re still traced back to cancer in animals.

In a study published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Yellow 6 and Yellow 5 has been linked to causing tumors in animal testing. But that’s not all! Science has found “Red 3 causes cancer in animals, and there is evidence that several other dyes also are carcinogenic.”

This evidence has been convincing enough for other food manufacturers to make a change in the food dyes they use, but not candy corn. That is not a very fun treat if you ask us!
