3 'Science-Backed' Foods That Can 'Reverse' Wrinkles And Give You A 'Smoother Complexion'

There are foods that are good for your skin, and we all know what they are — think leafy vegetables, healthy fats found in avocados, and lean protein like poultry. And then there are “science-backed” foods that can “reverse” wrinkles, according to some experts, and give you a “smoother complexion.”

If you’re placing your bets on foods that have been shown to make a difference, we guarantee you’re going to want to head to a grocery store asap and stock up on these three foods that are NOT leafy veggies, chicken, or fish.

According to Fiona Lawson Nutrition, “Not only can the right food keep new wrinkles at bay, but certain foods can even help to reverse the wrinkles you already have.” If this sounds like a plan that’s up your glowing skin alley, try these three foods.

60+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List
mango

1. Mango

One study showed that women ages 50 to 70 who ate 85 grams of mango four times a week reduced wrinkles in just four months. Mangos are rich in carotenoids that protect skin from UV exposure, but they’re also a nourishing source of vitamin C, which boosts collagen synthesis to make your skin smoother and healthier.

One caveat though is that eating too much mango can actually make skin worse — this is because the sweet mango contains sugar. Sugar is actually an ingredient that contributes to the breakdown of collagen, and can negatively affect your skin. When eaten in moderation, the positive effects of mango may outweigh its sugar content. Half-cup four times a week can be enough.

2. Almonds

Another study showed that women aged about 55 to 80 who ate between 60 to 70 grams of almonds also had reduced wrinkles after four months. Almonds have also been show to help reduce hyperpigmentation. This healthy nut contains vitamin E, which is excellent for combatting UV damage, and healthy fats for a stronger skin barrier — and both of these factors contribute to having fewer wrinkles and healthier-looking skin.

dark-chocoloate

3. Dark Chocolate

Dessert isn’t off the table when you’re trying to reach your skincare goals, but choosing well helps. A study of Korean women ages 43 to 86 showed that when they drank a dark chocolate beverage for six months their wrinkles were significantly reduced. Before you go out and purchase multiple candy bars, hold that thought. The high sugar content in chocolate bar can break down collagen faster. Instead, choose dark chocolate with higher cacao content (it should taste more bitter than sweet). Dark chocolate has flavanols that reduce UV damage and improve hydration.
