By now you’ve probably heard that you shouldn’t be washing your hair everyday if you want to preserve the natural oils of your scalp and actually reduce the greasy appearance of your locks. However, making that adjustment from shampooing daily to giving your hair a break can be a difficult one, and learning how to make second day hair look just as good as freshly washed locks can streamline your beauty routine and give your hair a much needed rest. We spoke with Bob Siebert, Professional Hair Stylist and Director of Education at ALOXXI to get his top tips for rocking second-day hair so you can feel confident and put together any day of the week.

Dry Shampoo & Texture Spray

When your hair becomes more lived in, adding texture is going to be the easiest way to elongate the wearability of your style while hiding any greasiness or limpness that may naturally come with second-day hair. Dry shampoo may be common knowledge for refreshing tired locks, but texture spray is another tool to keep in your arsenal that can elevate your look and provide much needed volume to your roots.

“Dry shampoos and texturizing sprays are great tools to refresh style, give volume and enhance texture,” explains Siebert. “I like Aloxxi’s Dry Shampoo and Aloxxi Bombshell Volumizing Grip Styler, as they are both talc-free, so there is no powdery residue or dulling of the hair.” If you’re working with curly hair, Siebert notes that utilizing a leave-in conditioner and spraying it gently over your strands can give your curls a stunning refresh while reducing frizz. Additionally, “If the hair texture is fine, I would recommend not wearing it straight on day two,” he adds.

Leaving your hair down and unstyled may be the default on hair wash days, but if you want to take your second-day strands to the next level it can be useful to try out some volumizing hairstyles that will actually look even better on slightly dirty hair. “Undone buns or chignons, top knots and braids are always great styles for second day hair,” suggests Siebert. “If day one hair is straight, add some texture to it, working with hot tools like a curling iron, flat iron or wand. Spray with texturizing spray once the hair has been curled and cooled for added texture and volume.”

When in doubt, adding a bit of texturizing spray or dry shampoo at the root in combination with a slight wave can easily elevate second-day hair from limp and lifeless to better than before. Hair with a little bit of grease to it often holds a curl better than freshly cleansed strands, so take advantage of this and lean into a wave or curl on day two to amp up the volume and look effortlessly chic in no time.

Even if you don’t have time to add any heat to your hair, those messy styles like a top knot or loose braid often look better on day two once your hair has a little edge to it, and claw clips are another uber trendy style that can hide lifeless locks and instantly enhance your look.
