Selena Gomez Explains Her Recent Weight Gain On TikTok Live

Gomez said in a TikTok Live video shared to Twitter about the lupus medication that’s causing her weight fluctuation, “When I’m taking [the medication], I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight,” She continued, “I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through and no one knows the real story.” Gomez admits that her recent weight gain has taken quite a toll on her mental health, she says that she’s trying to stay focused on her overall health.

“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful, and you’re wonderful,” she said. “Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s**t, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.” The Only Murders in the Building star also emphasized that she is “not a model” and “never will be.”

She then concluded the video with a special message to both her fans and the body shamers. “I love you guys and thanks for supporting me and understanding,” she said. “And if not, go away, because honestly, I don’t believe in shaming people for their body or anything.” You go, girl!

Gomez was diagnosed with lupus back in 2014. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that often leads to swelling, fatigue, and joint pain. The Rare Beauty founder even received a kidney transplant in 2017 from actress and friend Francia Raisa. Gomez recently got candid about the painful disease in her Apple TV+ documentary, My Mind & Me.

In the emotional documentary, the “Same Old Love” singer revealed her lupus kept getting worse and that she hadn’t felt such excruciating pain in years. “Now it just hurts. Like, in the morning when I wake up, I immediately start crying because it hurts, everything,” the musician said, crying.

To deal with the pain, Gomez had to go on an intravenous drug called Rituxan, which she had already tried in the past. “The Rituxan was really hard to do last time,” Gomez explained. “It’s about four hours, five hours. It’s really hard on your system at first, but it’s OK.” This is also the medication that she says is to blame for her weight gain.

Selena Gomez Addresses Body Shamers’ Comments On Instagram

This isn’t the first time that Gomez snapped back at body shamers. At this year’s Golden Globes, the Spring Breakers actress addressed comments about her body on the red carpet. In another live video, Gomez sat down with her sister (who was her date to the event!) to discuss the critiques.

“I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays,” Gomez said in the video, which was later shared on TikTok. She then turned to her sister and asked, “I mean, right?” to which Gracie replied, “Yeah,” which resulted in Selena adding, “But we don’t care,” and bursting into laughter, as Miley Cyrus’s song “Do My Thang” can be heard playing in the car.

Commenting on the above TikTok video of Selena and Gracie, one fan said, “She shouldn’t have to explain why her body looks how it does,” to which one replied, “Right but it’s the internet I guess.” Another fan echoed this, writing: “She must feel very insecure about people seeing her [at The Golden Globes]. She’s perfect and doesn’t need to give explanations.” “It’s sad that people have to address or ‘justify’ any little gain or loss,” said another. “She literally looks healthy and happy… people need to shut their mouths!” added another fan.
