Singer and actress Selena Gomez delivered a heartfelt speech to students from immigrant families part of the #Immigrad 2020 Virtual Commencement. Gomez began her speech with a joyful “Congratulations to all of the immigrads!”
Gomez, who is of Mexican descent, shared her personal story with the graduating class. "I want you guys to know that you matter and that your experiences are a huge part of the American story,” said Gomez. She continued, “ When my family came here from Mexico, they set into motion my American story as well as theirs. I'm a proud, third-generation American-Mexican, and my family's journeys and their sacrifice helped me get me to where I am today.”
She also said that her American story is not unique. “Each and every one of you have a unique tale of becoming an American, so regardless of where your family is fun, regardless of your immigration status, you have taken action to earn an education to make your families proud and to open up your worlds,” said Gomez, “So I'm sending all of my love to you guys today, and congratulations and I hope you guys are set off to be everything that you want to be."
Selena Gomez has had plenty of spotlight in her early entertainment years as well as a very public break up with ex Justin Bieber. However, 2019 brought forth a mature Gomez with a new album and focus.
In the fall of last year, she announced a new documentary series that she’s produced for Netflix called “Living Undocumented.” The documentary series follows eight immigrant families facing the possibility of deportation.
