The beauty chameleon also wisely tapped into her love of makeup, launching ‘Rare Beauty’ in 2020 to embrace finding yourself and your confidence, which Gomez explained she has been working on over the years. Discussing her affinity for the word ‘rare’ she explained, “That word to me – when I first heard it [used in the single Rare] with Nolan [Lambroza], one of the writers, I just said this is what I want to feel about myself. So it wasn’t even necessarily like: ‘Oh, I feel that way, let me sing it.’ It was almost like: ‘Actually, I need to feel that way about myself.’”

Gomez also elaborated on the intention behind starting her beauty line, noting, “I just wanted it to be that place where you feel good, it covers what you want to cover. And to be honest, I wanted it to become a platform for mental health and for young women or men who deal with anything – insecurities, depression, anxiety.” The 28-year-old is a vocal advocate for mental health awareness after her diagnosis with bipolar disorder which she revealed in 2020, and Gomez also launched the Rare Impact Fund to offer resources to those in need as they grapple with their mental health.
