Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have been the power couple of pop music for the last two years, ever since releasing their hit song “Señorita” together in June 2019 and making their romantic relationship official shortly thereafter. However, earlier this week the pair took to social media to announce the official end to their romance, stating that just as they began as friends, they will continue forth as such.

On each of their respective Instagram accounts, Mendes and Cabello posted matching statements which read, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward Camila and Shawn.”

Speculation has been swirling as to why the pair decided to end their relationship, but a source close to the couple revealed that the split was a mutual decision according to E!, writing that Mendes was the one who “initiated the conversation” last week, and while Cabello was “very upset over the split,” she also said it was for the best. The source also revealed, “The relationship was getting stale and complacent and they decided they are better off being friends.”

Celebrity gossip account Deuxmois also weighed in on the breakup, posting an alleged conversation overheard between Cabello and a friend on a flight last week, with Cabello reportedly asking the friend, “[Camila] is sitting in business class with another girl, scrolling the movies and she asked the friend, ‘What would you watch if you just went thought a breakup? Happy things or sad things?’”

The post continued, “The friend says, ‘Happy first and then you can do sad.’ Camilla responds, ‘Yes, I do not want to start sobbing on this plane.’” Deuxmois released this post days before Cabello and Mendes confirmed the end of their relationship, and the pair were last spotted earlier this month kissing on a beach in Miami looking thoroughly in love.

The pair began their friendship back in 2015, with Cabello admitting in 2019 that it was because of this friendship that she had fears about entering into a relationship with the “Stitches” singer. “When you first start dating a person and you know nothing about them, there’s less at risk there. I think when you fall in love with somebody you’ve known for a long time, there’s more at stake,” she told The Sun. It’s safe to say that despite their continued friendship, we can expect some relatable breakup songs coming from both artists shortly.
