There are plenty of mistakes you can make when it comes to haircare – from washing it too frequently to not washing it enough. Beyond your haircare habits, there are other blunders you definitely want to avoid in order to keep your hair strong, healthy, and full. Specifically, you should start keeping an eye out for the ingredients in your hair products, especially your shampoo.

Shampoos often contain silicones, which  can help your hair look shiny and silky on the surface, but can lead to longterm damage if you aren’t careful.

Silicones

Healthline explains how silicones impact your hair. "The seal they create keeps hair hydrated from within, but this protective layer can block other nourishing ingredients from penetrating deep into the hair follicle," the article says.

"Over time, silicone can also build up on your hair, resulting in a dry feel and dull appearance," the piece continues. "You may even notice that your hair becomes weaker and more prone to breakage." If you already have thinning and damaged hair, a shampoo with silicones could exacerbate this problem.

Still a little lost? Bridget Brager, celebrity and editorial hairstylist, explains the details to Coveteur, "Because you have added another layer (or barrier) to your hair strands, it can keep nutrients from getting in or penetrating the hair, which over time can cause the hair to weaken or break."

So why would it be in hair products at all? Brager continues, "Silicone is a mineral. It is an effective ingredient commonly used in hair-care products. It provides slip and shine, can help smooth and straighten hair, and gives hair a luxurious, conditioned feel." Despite these benefits, the reality is that silicones will do your hair more harm than good.

Dimethicone

Dimethicone is one type of silicone that you definitely consider avoiding. "Since dimethicone acts as a protecting cover on the surface of the hair, it contributes to product buildup and can actually prevent moisture and nutrients from coming in," Nutrafol explains. "Instead, it collects dirt and residue, clogs the pores on the scalp and causes skin irritation."
