Neuroscientist Rachelle Summers (@rachelle_summers_ on TikTok) recently shed light on a few of the most effective steps to take, providing valuable insights into how we can boost our memory and attention through simple yet effective methods. Here are her top five tips:

1. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Beauty rest? How about brain rest?! Sleep is crucial to every aspect of your health, including your memory. Summers emphasizes the importance of sufficient sleep for memory consolidation. She states, "It’s actually during the night while we’re asleep that we consolidate long-term memories." To optimize cognitive function, aim for 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. If you struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep, there are steps you can take to improve your sleep habits.

2. Incorporate Regular Exercise

Engaging in aerobic exercise not only benefits physical health but also enhances memory. Summers highlights how exercise promotes blood flow to the brain, which is crucial for cognitive function, Summers explains. Regardless of age, regular physical activity can contribute to better memory performance.

3. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness can improve your wellbeing in so many ways. In fact, wellness practices have gained significant attention for their cognitive benefits. Summers explains, "Mindfulness and meditation has been shown to increase the thickness of the prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain that’s associated with attention and memory." By incorporating mindfulness into your routine, you can strengthen your brain's ability to focus and retain information.

4. Engage in Brain-Boosting Activities

Stimulating your brain with new challenges is another effective way to improve memory. According to Summers, activities like learning a new language or musical instrument can enhance memory performance by promoting the growth of new neural connections. By stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new skills, you can keep your brain sharp and adaptable.

5. Practice Retrieval

Finally, actively recalling information from memory is essential for strengthening neural pathways. Summers suggests practicing retrieval without relying on external aids like Google.
