Ever experienced that radiant, post-facial glow where your skin feels deeply hydrated, supple, and nourished? In a captivating new TikTok video, celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert Erica Taylor introduces four “hydrating” serums designed to replicate these revitalizing effects for women over 40.

These serums target common issues faced by mature women, such as dark under-eyes, fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and an overall dull and tired look. According to Taylor, they are particularly effective when your moisturizer alone just isn’t doing the trick anymore.

4 Hydrating Serums That ‘Enhance Moisture Levels’ For Women Over 40, According To An Expert

“As we mature, sometimes the regular moisturizers are just no longer cutting it and you feel like, ‘I’m putting my moisturizer on, but my skin always feels dry,'” Taylor acknowledged. Serums are important, she stressed, as they work as “the catalyst that will pull the moisture and everything a little bit deeper.” In her above video, the TikTok creator went on to say that “serums penetrate a little deeper than a basic moisturizer, which can create just a barrier.”

She further elaborated that selecting a serum containing hyaluronic acid can be especially advantageous for mature women. “Hyaluronic acid is pretty much a moisture binder. It carries like 200 times its amount in water and binds moisture and emollients to the skin.” Taylor continued: “This is naturally found in our joints in our body. As we mature, we don’t make as much hyaluronic acid, so it is the bare minimum serum that can be used to enhance anyone’s moisture levels.”

The 100+ Best New Beauty Launches Of 2024

1. L'Oreal Paris Revitalift 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum

This eye serum promises to reduce puffiness and noticeably illuminate the eye area. Its formula is free of fragrance and parabens, has been allergy tested, approved by ophthalmologists for safety, and is safe for contact lens wearers.

This serum boasts a blend of 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid and 1% Caffeine, designed to rejuvenate the delicate skin around your eyes. Its lightweight, non-greasy formula helps to hydrate and plump the skin, while the caffeine works to diminish dark circles and puffiness, leaving your eyes looking refreshed and youthful.

2. GoPure Actives Hyaluronic Acid Serum with Vitamin E

Taylor suggested this next serum, a lightweight and powerful blend that moisturizes and combats aging. Enriched with Vitamin E, it deeply nourishes and hydrates the skin, enhancing its texture and overall look.

This potent formula not only promotes a more radiant and luminous complexion but also offers antioxidant protection to fight environmental stressors.

3. Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum

Another crucial ingredient to use in anti-aging skincare is vitamin C, Taylor said. This cruelty-free serum, infused with 15% vitamin C, brightens and revitalizes your complexion. It targets dullness and discoloration at their root, while also reducing the visible signs of aging.

"Vitamin C brightens, it's more active, and it helps with the discoloration, pigmentation and pore size," she said. She noted that "you want to have at least over like 10%" of vitamin C in your serum.

4. Murad Retinal ReSculpt Overnight Treatment

Taylor also suggested this one-of-a-kind retinal serum, praised for its ability to significantly lift and enhance sagging skin, smooth out deep wrinkles, and boost skin elasticity. "Retinol helps with cellular turnover," Taylor explained. "Generally, this will be used at night, where you get the most cellular regeneration." She also added: "if you're super sensitive, you should consult with your esthetician/ dermatologist."

She went on to say that retinol products like this one "help to excel the cellular turnover, which is why sometimes there will be a downside of, like, flaking and crusting, because it's getting the dead skin off that needs to go." Taylor continued: "It's basically shedding to come a new you, but you shouldn't use it every night."

The Bottom Line

Taylor emphasizes the importance of including niacinamide when choosing skincare products and serums for mature skin. "Niacinamides help with gentle cellular regeneration, turnover, brightening evening discoloration," she says.

"Niacinamide is usually a little bit more gentle than vitamin C, so niacinamide definitely plays nice with others as well." The more you know!
