Everybody struggles with different skincare issues, so your routine should be personalized to the changes you want to see. Prevention is the most practical way to preserve the longevity of your skin, but the products you use as you age are also important for maintaining beautiful skin. While there is merit in shelling out money for expensive and well-researched products, there are also surprising items that you likely already have at home which can help to tighten your skin and slow aging, without the price tag.

Board certified dermatologist and beauty expert Dr. Anna Guanche says, “I always suggest you see your dermatologist and together develop the best plan to help reach your healthy skin goals. But there are some nice home-remedies that may help nourish the skin or temporarily tighten and tone. Here are four of my favorite at home remedies that I have tried myself.”

60+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List

Honey And Egg White Mask

Working with the ingredients you likely already have in the kitchen, a honey and egg white face mask is perfect for purifying and tightening your skin. Guanche explains, “Honey is an antioxidant that can help remove toxins that build up over time in your skin. Egg whites are rich in protein (albumin), which works to rebuild skin cells and improve skin elasticity. When mixed together as a mask, it can temporarily tighten skin. When the whites dry, they contract and give the skin a firmer, smoother appearance and feel.”

Try mixing one egg white and 1 tsp of honey together, before applying to your face and letting set for 15 minutes.

Witch Hazel

A medicine cabinet staple, Guanche notes that witch hazel is great for naturally tightening your skin and shrinking pores. “It works as an astringent and helps to slow the breakdown of elastin and collagen in the skin. A key is not washing it off your skin, but letting it dry.”

Apply to a cotton ball and rub across your skin after your evening routine. If witch hazel alone is too drying for you, apply your favorite moisturizer overtop.

Coffee Scrub

Not only does a coffee scrub smell great, but it can also help to tighten and brighten your skin. Both caffeine and coffee are antioxidants, and Guanche explains that this will work to wake up your skin. “If coffee grounds are blended with coconut oil, it can be used as a scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells for a more rejuvenated complexion. Long term consistent use of antioxidants like coffee or green tea are helpful in preserving the quality and luster of the skin.”

Aloe Vera

Perfect for a painful, peeling sunburn, aloe vera’s benefits don’t stop there. The gel works to refresh and soothe skin, even sans sunburn, and the malic acid in it can help to improve elasticity. Smoothe across your face, and once you rinse it off, your skin will feel noticeably firmer according to Guanche.

While skin care is important, it doesn’t always have to be expensive. Take a look in your cabinets (and check with your dermatologist) to master these at home remedies which will have your skin looking brighter and tighter in no time. You don’t have to invest half of your paycheck into your beauty products to have the skin of your dreams.
