Wrinkles happen–it’s just a fact of life. As you get older, wrinkles are usually the first signs of aging to appear on your face. While they’re nothing to be ashamed of and totally normal (they happen to everyone, after all), we understand that not everyone wants to just sit back and let them happen.

We spoke with Dr. Purvisha Patel, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, to learn what common mistakes we could be making that cause wrinkles.

Here’s her advice for keeping your skin looking more youthful:

1. Sleeping On Your Face

Gravity wins when we sleep on our faces. Studies show that the side that we sleep on definitely ages/ loses collagen faster. Sleeping on your face promotes full face sagging and loss of collagen- don't do it. sleeping on your face will make you age faster.

2. Not Washing Your Face

It’s so important to wash your face and take off your day of dirt/sweat and makeup. Exfoliating cleansers such as Visha Skincare Advanced Purifying Cleanser wash off all the day and unclog your pores to prepare your skin to refresh and regenerate overnight. Washing in the am is important too, to get your skin ready for the day/makeup.

3. Not Wearing Sunscreen

Everyone who cares about photo-aging and preventing wrinkles should wear an SPF >30 on a daily basis. Even if you are not in direct sunlight, UV radiation can get to your skin through windows, and causes free radical damage to increase collagen breakdown. Not wearing an SPF can make you age faster. Visha Skincare Advanced Correcting Serum contains retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, and a natural lightening agent that helps fight photo damage that has occurred, prevents wrinkles from occurring and increases collagen production.

4. Using Too Many Skincare Products

Using too many skincare products without knowing what the use is for can be harmful to your skin. Products that contain retinol are used to prevent wrinkles and when mixed with products with benzoyl peroxide (to fight acne) can make your skin dry and peely and increase skin irritation. Visha Skincare Advanced Correcting Serum is one product that addresses acne, fine lines, discoloration, collagen production and scars. It is important that formulations that are used on your skin do not make your skin worse.

5. Not Drinking Enough Water

You must feed your at least skin 6 glasses of water a day. Hydration is important from the inside and out. When you are dehydrated skin loses turgor/bounce. Over a long period of time, dehydration can cause your skin to look dry and face look sallow.
