If you’re a skincare hoarder like me, you will be surprised to learn that there are so many products that you don’t really need in your beauty routine (yay it ain’t so!). That’s right, many cosmetic products have no real use or purpose–in fact, many of them are just a marketing ploy to make you spend more money because you know will.
Here is a list of products dermatologists say you really don’t need in your skincare routine so you can save money and the time and energy using them!
Shaving cream makes the list because you're already using a product that can get the job done--body wash! According to dermatologist Dr. Heidi Waldorf, shaving cream has two functions: To soften the hair follicles and to help the razor glide against your skin. Body wash can do just that too! Kill two birds with one stone, ditch the shaving cream, and just use your body wash instead.
This dermatologist-recommended body wash can double as a shaving cream. It also has a gentle formula to prevent irritation.
Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash ($5.99)
Sun exposure is one of these leading causes of aging, so SPF is key! However, SPF with high numbers, which are typically more expensive, are unnecessary as lower numbers work just as well. "It is unlikely that SPF 100 is better than SPF 50," says dermatologist Dr. Ellen Marmur. "SPF 30 to 50 is the sweet spot for sunscreens in any setting. This provides you with good coverage to prevent sunburns."
This water-resistant SPF spray offers broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Spray - SPF 30 ($8.99)
“In the age of Purel and chronic hand-washing, everyone needs a hand cream, and you likely already own one, so why buy a foot cream too?” says Dr. Waldorf. She makes a good point! Hand creams can double as a foot cream, especially when they contain similar, if not the same ingredients. Save yourself the money!
With shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and honey, there's no way your hands (or feet!) could ever be dry with this luxurious hand cream.
L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream ($29.00)
I love using toner after cleansing to wipe off excess dirt. But, according, to dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann, they're a waste of time and money. "Toners were invented because cleansers used to leave a soapy film on your skin that had to be removed. Today's cleansers don't do that."
There's no need to use a toner if you use a deep cleanser! This cleanser gently removes dirt, oil, and grime from your pores using Amazonian white clay and diatomaceous earth particles.
KIEHL'S Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser ($23.00)
So, go ahead and clean out these items from your skincare stash. They're useless and it'll save you a ton!
