We all know that a balanced diet and exercise is the recommended method for losing weight. But what if there was something additional you could do to kickstart the process?
Turns out, there is. And it involves heading to the spice drawer.
New research shows that cumin powder may help boost weight loss, decrease body fat and improve heart health. A 2016 study of 88 overweight women revealed that a yogurt snack containing three grams of cumin powder promoted weight loss and improved cholesterol levels, while the yogurt alone did not. What’s more, cumin might indirectly aid in weight loss by improving overall digestion. Additional research indicates that the popular spice promotes healthy digestion by increasing the release of bile from the liver, helping to break down fat and nutrients in the gut.
Cumin is also rich is thymoquinone, a unique and naturally occurring chemical that possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. Lina Velikova, MD, Ph.D., a medical advisor at Supplements101, adds that “cumin’s levels of thymoquinone can increase insulin sensitivity, thus lowering blood sugar level.” And while cumin may not cut down fat from a specific part of your body, it will help reduce bowel inflammation that can result in making your belly look leaner.
Want to try it for yourself? The cumin and yogurt snack mentioned in the study doesn’t sound all that appetizing, but there are plenty of tastier applications!
Are you a tea drinker? Cumin tea is a tasty take on traditional herbal blends and can help reduce bloating and digestive issues, while keeping you hydrated. Simply steep two teaspoons of cumin seeds in boiling water, strain the seeds and drink the water that’s been infused with cumin’s healthy oils and extracts. For best results, enjoy it twice a day on an empty stomach.
