Especially around the holiday season, Starbucks is a one-stop-shop for sweet, caffeinated drinks to get you through your day. But while they never claim to craft the healthiest beverages around, certain items on the menu can make a real impact on your metabolism and overall health, particularly if you’re trying to lose weight.

The Venti Caramel Macchiato is the worst drink you can order off the Starbucks menu, according to health expert Lynell Ross. Coming in with 53 grams of sugar per serving and 26 grams of fat, this menu classic is a sugar bomb to your system.

Ross explains, “Your drink contains 515 calories, more than is needed for a meal, and 238 of those calories are from fat. Heart health experts recommend no more than 10 grams of saturated fat for the whole day.”

While this classic drink might be delicious, the sugar content alone is enough to overwhelm your system and leave you with a severe sugar crash and a slower metabolism. Ross says, “When we consume that much sugar at one time, our pancreas has to work extra hard, and over time we burn out insulin receptors that can lead to type 2 diabetes."

The high fat in this beverage can also contribute to the slowing of your metabolism, ultimately leading to weight gain and even heart disease if you regularly indulge in this treat.

Sugar is one of the primary contributors to weight gain, and high volumes can go undetected in your favorite sweet drinks. The amount of sugar in a Caramel Macchiato is difficult for your body to process and so calorie dense that your metabolism will be slowed as your system attempts to turn the unhealthy nutrients into energy.

If you only make the occasional visit to Starbucks, one treat won’t ruin your health journey, but for a coffee enthusiast, there are plenty of other options on the menu that will have far less of an impact on your overall well-being!
