With the New Year upon us, it’s time to finalize your 2019 resolutions–meaning it’s finally time to lose that extra belly fat that you swore would be gone years ago. January is the perfect time for a fresh start and fresh starts mean getting your diet on track.

If you want to start 2019 off on the right foot and be your healthiest self yet, you should leave these terrible eating habits in the past and finally give up consuming all those empty calories, once and for all.

To finally meet your weight loss goals, leave sweets, namely candy, in 2018. These “empty calories” are the absolute worst for your waistline. Sugary foods contain little to no nutritional value, adding calories that only lead to stomach rolls without making you feel full or satisfied.

"Sugar is a carbohydrate. Too many carbs can lead to weight gain mainly due to extra calories in the diet," says dietitian Judy Caplan. "Watch your sugar intake whether it comes from sweets, candy, potatoes, bread, and rice. Sugars in any form especially form without fiber can lead to blood sugar fluctuations and cause cravings for more carbohydrates."

Sweets like cake, cookies, ice cream, and candy bars can hinder your weight loss success tremendously. "These [foods] tend to be high in saturated fats, added sugars, added salt and high in kilojoules (energy)," said dietitian Alexandra Parker to Huffington Post. "Foods that are high in energy are going to blow your energy budget and make it difficult to lose weight."
