We all need our daily cup of coffee (sometimes two or three…) to get our mornings started. Luckily, there is nothing unhealthy about having a cup of coffee each day, but the ingredients you add to it might cause you some problems. And the worst ingredients for you are the ones that you probably think are healthy.
Many people opt for artificial sweeteners in their coffee because they are a way to get around using sugar - which we all know is bad for you. Sugar is directly linked to weight gain, so it seems that artificial sweeteners are a better option. But this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes, like Splenda, Equal, Sweet n Low or Truvia, give your food a sugar-like taste while being calorie-free, or at least very low in calories. If this seems too good to be true, that’s because it is - at least, these artificial sweeteners come with some unwanted side effects.
These types of products achieve their sweetness without increasing their calorie count through chemicals that can harm your health. One of the biggest reasons you might want to cut artificial sweeteners out of your diet is that they can increase your appetite and promote weight gain.
Try cutting out sweeteners from your coffee altogether. Coffee itself is pretty good for your health, so it is best to leave it as simple as possible. Instead of artificial sweeteners, you can try adding some ground cinnamon for a little bit of flavoring in a healthy way.
