Bobs are so hot right now that you’ve probably seen so many variations of the haircut you can’t keep up with their names. It seems like every celebrity has a bob or is in the midst of changing their bob to a slightly different version of the cut. Not only is the bob a super-glam style that looks sophisticated while also being more low maintenance than longer hair, but it’s a fabulous choice for women over 40. As we age, we may experience very common changes to our hair’s texture. Hormonal shifts can cause hair to shed and thin over time, and the same hairstyles we sported in our twenties may not look as vibrant and healthy to us in our forties, fifties, and beyond.

If this sounds familiar to you, now is the perfect time to try a bob on for size. These four bobs are beautiful on mature hair, and they just so happen to also be trendy this spring.

1. Bob With Side Fringe

Center parts reigned supreme for several years. We have nothing against wearing your hair parted in the middle — it can look chic. But when hair is shedding, it often sheds first around the crown and your first sign that your hair is thinning often comes from a widening part. The simplest trick, and the trendiest one at the moment, is to wear your fringe or a front layer of your bob off to one side. Bonus points: it brings a bit of mystery to your hair, as well.

2. Bob With a Subtle Flip

The bob with flicked, flipped ends had a major moment in the 1960s and then again in the 1990s — and it’s back. Achieve this fun, flirty look with a round brush, blow dryer, and light hairspray. It works best with blunt ends, but can also be great on layers.

3. Italian Bob

The Italian bob is usually slightly (slightly) longer than a chin-length bob and hits around the mid-neck. It features soft, bouncy layers and chunky ends, and it pairs beautifully with large glam waves. This is as sophisticated a bob as it gets.

4. Texturized Bob

The fastest way to make thinning hair look thicker is to add texture to your bob. Waves, curls, and just a bit more of a mussed-up look can be achieved with root and volumizing sprays, as well as hot rollers or heatless curls. The nice thing about having a bob is that it’s easier and quicker to style, so you may not find the texturizing process to be a chore, which is a nice bonus about having this shorter haircut.
