Who is in the mood for a little autumn hair change? When the temps begin to drop and the colors of autumn come alive on trees and — everywhere, really — what could feel better than switching up your summer style for something more dramatic?
These five hairstyles are rising stars when it comes to trends, according to professional hairstylist Justin Hickox. But they don’t work perfectly on everyone, and knowing which to consider and which are best to avoid is key.
1. Pixie
Two super-trendy pixies you’re about to see more of are a very short pixie with texture like waves and curls and a lengthier pixie with longer pieces pulled to one side that gives the illusion of more length. The problem with this second pixie is that if your hair is on the thick side, the extra bulk can make it look misshapen — this is a cut that works best with thinner hair.
2. Crob
The “crob” is a shorter version of the French bob, which cuts off above the cheekbone. This cut has beveling in the back that allows it to be so short. If you have a lower neckline, Hickox says it’s going to be more difficult to achieve this look, and it’s works best with medium and medium-fine textured hair. If your hair is thicker, it will help to layer the hair at top to remove additional bulk.
3. Textured Layers/Lob
If you are looking for a way to get away from the classic chin-length bob, try a collarbone-length lob that has movement and texture. This type of lob has a ton of layering at the bottom, which won’t work if you have thin hair because it can make it look overly thin. If you love this look though, one thing you can do is keep the ends blunt and focus your layers at top. The textured lob works beautifully on medium hair that has a little wave because it really brings out that texture.
4. Blunt Midi
Despite the odd name, the blunt mini is recognizable: it’s a medium-length, one-length haircut. Think of a grown-out lob that is slightly longer in the front than in the back to give it shape. If you have fine hair, this is great cut for you, though Hickox reminds us that the longer it gets from the neckline, the thinner it can look.
5. Baby Bangs
Baby bangs are bangs that are cropped shorter than typical bangs. Even though these are becoming a big trend and can look chic, they aren’t for everyone. Someone with a round face or a longer forehead can elongate their face with baby bangs but Hickox says they are high maintenance. If you want to experiment with bangs, but baby bangs won’t work, you can also consider wispy bangs and longer, curtain bangs.
