The Appeal Of The Blunt, Sleek 'Hydro Bob' For Summer 2024
A chin-length or mid-neck-length blunt bob is a classic summer haircut, celebrity hair stylist Gina Rivera tells us, because it allows a shorter length than one might be used to, without going too short. "It's such a popular look right now," she says.
Rivera also notes that it's perfect for many hair types as "blunt bob haircuts keep the fullness at the ends which is great for fine, thin hair." Rivera stresses that anyone with finer hair types might want to avoid hairstyles that have a lot of layers as this can make the hair collapse and appear thinner.
She adds that hydro bobs like Florence Pugh's are "also great because you can add volume by styling them appropriately." Blunt hairstyles can "make hair appear fuller," she reiterates.
A long, sleek and one-length lob like Jennifer Lopez's is a "great option" for beating the heat, Rivera notes, "especially for those that don’t want to cut all of their hair off." In addition, this 'do allows for the "removal of damaged ends" and its one-length "creates a lot of opportunities for styling."
Rivera also says that this look helps to "soften the features," making it a great choice for anti-aging goals as well. "This style is darling tucked behind an ear or just worn down," Rivera adds, and Lopez did this on the red carpet recently, proving her point.
Tips For Getting A 'Hydro Bob' At The Salon
If you've decided that you want to replicate Kaia Gerber's 'do above, Rivera has some helpful tips to share.
"It's best to always consult with your stylist on a maintenance schedule but for those trying to regain hair health, make sure to trim every 4-6 weeks," she advises.
It's also super important in-between visits, she notes, to use a "great hair supplement packed with biotin, collagen and B vitamins."
How To Style Your New 'Hydro Bob'
Once you've taken the plunge and gone for the chop, Smith shared with Glamour that before you dismiss this trend as too high-maintenance, he promises that the styling is actually super practical to pull off (so even the laziest among us can embrace it).
According to him, there are two ways to nail the wet look. The first method involves using leave-in styling products.
"I love nourishing leave-in creams such as Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother for this because it gives that moisture, hydration, and definition, without it looking oily," he told the outlet.
Smith went on to say that "one better than that, if you don't mind it looking slightly stronger and bolder and you love the idea of your hair being groomed and in place, is to use your favorite repair or moisture mask."
He recommends Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector. "Use it as a styling product and leave it in your hair. Not only are you going to get definition in your hair, but you're getting a treatment at the same time as styling your hair."
The great thing is, not only will it make your hair look fabulous in the moment, but over time, it also works to strengthen it. "It's a great trick for those who don’t find the time to do weekly masks or treatments and will give the semi-wet-look effect while allowing your hair to soak in goodness at the same time," he noted.
