We all know that tea is an extremely healthy drink. Depending on which type you drink, tea can boost metabolism, fight inflammation, promote weight loss, improve brain function and reduce headaches. Many types of tea are also naturally caffeinated, making it an excellent drink to have in the mornings.

But despite these numerous benefits, tea can be made unhealthy if you don’t prepare it the right way. There are some additives people add to tea that can make the drink extremely bad for you.

And the worst ingredient is also the most popular: sugar.

A small amount of sugar isn’t that bad for you, but a teaspoon here and there can really add up. So if you’re having a teaspoon of sugar in every cup of tea and drinking multiple cups of tea each day, you run the risk of going overboard on your daily sugar intake. Especially when you take into consideration all of the other sources of sugar in your daily intake.

There's no mystery as to why sugar is bad for you. For one thing, too much sugar almost certainly leads to weight gain.

Plus, sugar is also terrible for your skin. It can cause inflammation, acne and accelerates the aging process, making your skin appear dry, wrinkled or hyperpigmented.

And on a more serious note, an excess in sugar can increase your risk of a range of diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, depression and cancer.

According to the American Heart Association, adult women should limit their daily sugar intake to six teaspoons or 25 grams.

So if you're drinking two cups of tea each day, each with a teaspoon of sugar, you're already bringing your sugar intake up to over a quarter of your daily limit.

Consuming sugar in the morning can potentially be even worse for you than having it at other times of the day, because it may drain your energy and slow your metabolism. This is the exact opposite of what yur tea should do for you!

Instead of adding sugar to your morning cup of tea, you can try sweetening your drink with honey as a healthy alternative.
