Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by an underactive thyroid gland, which leads to an insufficient production of thyroid hormones. These hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, and overall body function. When the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones, it can result in a range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain, and difficulty losing weight.

Weight management can be particularly challenging for individuals with hypothyroidism. On the other hand, consuming excessive amounts of sugary foods can exacerbate symptoms of hypothyroidism. Diet is an important piece in every aspect of health, and high sugar intake in particular can contribute to inflammation and negatively impact insulin sensitivity.

We spoke with Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT, to learn about the one sugary food he says you should cut out if you struggle with hypothyroidism and a slowed down weight loss. Feder revealed that sugary baked goods and pastries such as sweetened/chocolate croissants are the ones you want to minimize as much as you can.

Sugary Baked Goods

Excessive consumption of refined sugars and processed carbohydrates found in many baked goods may contribute to inflammation and impact insulin sensitivity. This, in turn, can potentially disrupt thyroid function, exacerbating the symptoms of hypothyroidism. The body's response to high sugar intake may further complicate weight management, a challenge already prevalent in individuals with hypothyroidism due to a slowed metabolism.

Feder first starts out by stating: "As a dietitian with hypothyroidism, it is important to note there is no direct link between any specific sugary foods and the development of hypothyroidism."

He further adds, "However, sugary baked goods can increase your risk of hypothyroidism and slow down weight loss. One of the worst ones in my opinion are chocolate croissants or really any type of sweetened croissant."

He continues to note that sweetened croissants don't just contain elevated levels of added sugars and processed carbohydrates; they also boast unhealthy amounts of saturated fats and calories. The substantial presence of sugars and processed carbs may induce fluctuations in blood sugar levels, leading to spikes and subsequent crashes.

"This can lead to insulin resistance which has been associated with hypothyroidism. Additionally, the high amounts of saturated fats can lead to increases in LDL or bad cholesterol levels as well as fatty deposits around the thyroid gland. This can lead to inflammation and potential increases in the risk of hypothyroidism. Lastly, the high amounts of calories, fats, carbs, and sugars, all can contribute to a weight gain and slow down weight loss," Feder says.

Healthier Alternatives

While it may be tempting to reach for the basket of pastries or pass by a bakery shop that just baked some fresh buttery croissants, Feder shares that there are always healthier options available that won't comprise your weight or mess with your hypothyroidism symptoms and risks.

"Instead of having a croissant, I recommend a whole grain bagel instead. Bagels are not made with butter and therefore are much lower in fat, saturated fat, and calories," he says. However, be careful of processed bagels that are packed with artificial ingredients.

Furthermore, he says "whole grain bagels provide healthy amounts of fiber and will not spike your blood sugars as much as processed grains will. Lastly, since they are lower in calories than croissants, they are less likely to slow down your weight loss when consumed in moderation."
