During the winter months, especially around the holidays, an increase in sugar in our diet can cause already acne-prone skin to experience flare-ups. But just because you’re probably not snacking on as many cookies and hot cocoa during the hot summer months, doesn’t mean you aren’t consuming foods that are bad for acne-prone skin.
Dr. Howard Sobel, a leading dermatologist in New York City, shared with us the one summer food you should avoid if you have acne-prone skin, and the answer might just surprise you.
“Summer is the season of fresh fruit. However, fruit juice, especially if it’s made solely of fruit, can actually inflame acne and cause irritation,” said Dr. Sobel.
While generally speaking, fruit is considered to be good for you, it’s not the best for your skin if it’s acne-prone. Dr. Sobel explained why.
“Fruit is high in sugar and low in fiber, which spikes blood sugar levels and worsens breakouts in people with acne-prone skin,” said Dr. Sobel. “I suggest opting for fruit juices with a vegetable base to cut down on sugar and include those much-needed vitamins like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A.”
Some popular store-bought vegetable-based juices include Suja: Glow, BluePrint: Arugula Kale (sold at Whole Foods), and Evolution Fresh: Organic Green Devotion (sold at Starbucks).
