A good hair day is an undeniable confidence booster, but imagine having that feeling everyday with a head of shiny, healthy hair. The texture and quality of your hair is largely indicative of your overall health, and because of this, improving your diet to be filled with more nutrient dense foods can have a profound effect on the strength of your locks.
Not only does eating your fruits and vegetables help to benefit your body, but certain ingredients can even work to improve the appearance of your hair, building up each strand for less breakage and fallout over time. While you could take any number of supplements to help achieve Rapunzel-like locks, there’s one superfood that doctors agree you should be eating regularly to ensure a good hair day nearly everyday.
Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can all help to promote an overall healthier body, and kiwi, packed with a multitude of such components, is a fantastic addition to your diet for both your wellness and your hair. “Kiwi contains zinc which can stimulate hair growth, prevent hair fall and dandruff,” says Dr. Kristina Hendija, MD and medical advisor to Beardoholic.
Zinc is essential for healthy hair growth, promoting the natural production of oil within your strands, and preventing fallout. Studies have even shown that a deficiency in zinc can lead to hair loss issues, and kiwi is a great source which can limit your chances of being deficient.
Not only is this superfruit packed with zinc, but kiwi also offers a number of other vitamins and minerals which have been known to support stronger and healthier hair. “[Kiwi] is also rich in vitamin C, K, E, potassium and folate which help nourish your scalp, encourage blood circulation and prevent your hair from turning grey prematurely,” notes Hendija.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant which can prevent damage within your strands, ensuring they stay firmly attached to your head without increased risk of fallout. Vitamin C also helps to boost collagen within the body which can have a profound effect on building up your hair, skin, and nails.
As for how often you should be consuming kiwi to reap the benefits in your hair, Hendija explains that there’s no need to eat this fruit everyday in order to see the effects. “Eat kiwi a few times a week to get the most benefit, but never overdo it as it can interact with the function of your thyroid,” she explains.
“You can eat kiwi as is, combined with other fruits, added to your salad, or made into a smoothie,” Hendija adds. Scalp care is one key component in maintaining a healthy head of hair, and kiwi is great for nourishing this skin to facilitate the growth of strong and resilient locks.
Not only good for your internal health, kiwi is a superfruit for your complexion and hair as well, allowing for overall healthier, shinier strands. A good hair day is not only dependent on styling, but the quality of your locks as well, and taking care to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is one of the best ways to get a headstart on improving your beautiful hair.
Add some kiwi into your morning smoothie, top a bowl of oatmeal or yogurt parfait, or even have some as a mid-afternoon snack which will be much more effective for boosting hair growth than blindly subscribing to vitamins and supplements with empty promises.
