Efficient metabolism refers to the body’s ability to convert food and drink into energy effectively, ensuring optimal use of nutrients and minimal fat storage. Surprisingly, some supplements can play a key role in boosting metabolic efficiency by supporting various bodily processes. When combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, these supplements can help optimize metabolism and overall health.
We checked in with Dr. Kubanych Takyrbashev, MD, health & wellness advisor at NAO, to learn about two supplements to take if you want to boost your metabolism. Takyrbashev revealed that green tea extract and caffeine are the ones to consider for metabolic health. Read on to find out why.
Green Tea Extract
Green tea extract is a popular supplement known for its potential to enhance metabolism and support weight management. Green tea extract may improve insulin sensitivity and support overall metabolic health. As a supplement, it can be a beneficial addition to a balanced diet and active lifestyle for those looking to improve their metabolic efficiency.
"Green tea extract is a supplement I frequently suggest. It contains catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), known for increasing metabolism and promoting fat oxidation," says Takyrbashev. "EGCG stimulates thermogenesis, the process of heat generation, and calorie burning. Additionally, green tea extract has antioxidant properties that support overall metabolic health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation."
Caffeine
Caffeine, commonly found in coffee, tea, and various supplements, works by stimulating the central nervous system, which can increase metabolic rate and promote calorie burning.
Takyrbashev adds that caffeine could "increase alertness while temporarily boosting metabolism. It enhances thermogenesis, the body's heat production process, increasing calorie burning. Moreover, caffeine can improve exercise performance, further contributing to metabolic health."
When paired with a balanced diet and consistent exercise, these supplements become pivotal in optimizing metabolism and promoting overall well-being.
As always, before starting any new supplement regimen, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure suitability and safety based on individual health conditions.
