Tea, a beloved beverage enjoyed worldwide, encompasses a diverse range of flavors, aromas, and health benefits. Beyond its soothing and comforting qualities, certain types of tea have gained recognition for their potential to aid in boosting metabolism and supporting weight loss efforts. They may help increase energy expenditure, enhance fat oxidation, and promote thermogenesis, thereby supporting weight management goals.
We checked in with Susan Schachter, a registered dietitian, nutritionist, and co-founder of 120/Life, Dr. Josh Axe of Ancient Nutrition, and Dr. Nikola Djordjevic of Health Careers, to learn about two surprising teas that can boost metabolism and help with losing weight as well. They revealed that ginger tea and green tea are two of the best options. Read on to find out why.
Ginger Tea
Rich in bioactive compounds like gingerol and gingerdione, ginger possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can support metabolic health. Additionally, ginger has been shown to increase thermogenesis and promote feelings of fullness, potentially reducing calorie intake.
"It may help boost metabolism and increase calorie burning, which can contribute to fat loss," Schachter says. "Secondly, it can help reduce appetite and curb cravings, leading to reduced calorie intake. Ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerols and shogaols, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in studies," Schachter notes.
So, what's a good way to incorporate this beverage into your diet? Schacter says to "start with a cup or two per day and gradually increase the intake, while monitoring any potential side effects or digestive discomfort."
Green Tea
Green tea contains compounds called catechins, particularly one known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which have been shown to boost metabolism. It is a calorie-free beverage that can be consumed in place of higher-calorie drinks like sugary sodas or juices. By replacing these beverages with green tea, you can reduce your overall calorie intake, which can contribute to weight loss over time.
Dr. Axe says, "Green tea is a healthy addition to your diet since its consumption has been considered a natural metabolism booster for centuries thanks to special antioxidant compounds." Additionally, Dr. Djordjevic notes, "Green tea is a magic drink loaded with antioxidants that can even prevent diseases such as cancer, tumors, high cholesterol, and heart diseases."
