Move over, lipstick. Eyeliner is secretly the best makeup tool you have in your kit if your goal is to lift your face and look fresher and more modern. Even if you got four hours of sleep and have 10 minutes in total to do your makeup in the morning, with a few good hacks courtesy of those in the know, you can add a dash of winged eyeliner and be out the door. This is the surprising winged eyeliner trick women over 40 should try because it takes years off your appearance.

Apply Cream AND Liquid Eyeliner

Most of us are making do with one type of eyeliner and it’s usually a toss-up between a pencil or liquid formula (or whatever we happen to have on our vanity that month). But, according to Beauty Expert Bella Williams of Skincell, using a dual-ended eyeliner with a cream liner on one end and a liquid liner on the other is the winged eyeliner trick that’s about to take your look into another stratosphere. “By lining the upper and lower lash lines with the creamy side will help create an appearance of thicker lashes while also lifting up the eye area,” Williams said. “Then, using the liquid liner on the outer corner of the eye will help further define your eyes and make them appear more awake.”

The product that Williams recommends using is Stila Dual-Ended Eyeliner, which is a dual-ended long-wear eyeliner that offers an easy glide cream formula on one end and a smudge-proof liquid liner on the other. “It is a great choice for creating a look that lifts and defines the eyes,” she said.

This trick looks especially great on women over 40 because it helps to make your eyes appear more awake and vibrant while also helping to reduce any signs of aging around the eye area, according to Williams. “The creamy side of the liner also helps to thicken and enhance your lashes, making them appear fuller, longer and more voluminous, making the whole eye area look lifted and refreshed,” she said.

If you prefer a more subtle eye makeup look, winged eyeliner may be more drastic, but there’s another option to consider.

Tightlining

“As a makeup artist, I have found that one ‘surprising’ eyeliner trick that looks especially great on women over 40 is tightlining,”  said Dorian Scotto from StepUptoStyling.com. “Tightlining is the process of applying eyeliner to the waterline of the upper eyelid, as close to the lashes as possible, to create the illusion of thicker, fuller lashes and make the eyes appear larger.”

To perform tightlining, Scotto says to first apply a small amount of eyeliner to the brush and then gently press the brush onto the waterline. “I use a waterproof eyeliner pencil or gel eyeliner to ensure that the liner stays put all day,” Scotto said. “I also recommend using a smudger brush to smudge the liner slightly for a more natural look. I think this trick looks great on women over 40 because it helps to lift the eye area and face, making the eyes appear more open and youthful. Tightlining is also a great way to enhance the natural shape of the eyes without creating a heavy, dramatic look.”

One of the products that Scotto recommends for this trick is "L'Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner" and "Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner" as it is waterproof and easy to apply.
