We’ve got fantastic news for vegan Taco Bell lovers! Your options at the fast food Mexican chain are expanding, thanks to the fact that they’re now testing vegan beef at 50 news locations. If you live in Birmingham, AL, you can now get your Crunchwrap with more than just beans or rice—major win!
This vegan plant-based protein is made from a blend of soy and pea proteins, and it’s seasoned to match all of the Taco Bell flavors you know and love. The only downside is that all 50 participating locations are in Birmingham, and this new protein will only be available until mid-October, (or while supplies last). However, there’s high hopes that it will eventually hit restaurants nationwide. Fingers crossed!
Vegan Beef At Taco Bell
If you do happen to be in the Birmingham area, lucky you! You can try this vegan beef today, on top of Nachos BellGrande or with the new Crispy Melt Taco. The latter will cost you $2.49, and here's the really great news: there will be no upcharge for vegan beef! What a gamechanger.
In a statement to VegNews, a spokesperson told the outlet "[Taco Bell] believes that fans should never have to compromise taste for their cravings and dietary choices. We pride ourselves on offering food that’s delicious—and accessible—for everyone. That’s why the Crispy Melt Taco will be available for the same price regardless of choice of plant-based protein or beef."
Taco Bell first tested plant-based meat alternatives last April in Tustin, CA with meatless Crunchy Taco Supreme known as the Cravetarian Taco, then again in the fall, where they tried out their plant-based beef in Detroit. If things continue to go well with the testing in Birmingham, we'll be one-step closer to a nationwide vegan option. The anticipating is killing us! Roadtrip to Alabama, anyone?
Meanwhile, Taco Bell is also working on meat alternatives with Beyond Meat, and they hope to give customers a taste by the end of 2022.
