With the added pressure of COVID-19, our bodies are often more susceptible to illness these days. This is why it’s essential to take care of yourself at all times, and do things that nourish your immune system so that you can be ready to fight off any illness that comes your way. Nutrition is a crucial component of this—eating a diet rich in all the necessary food groups, especially fruits and vegetables, is the best way to support your overall wellness.
Hydration is another important piece of the puzzle, but the sad reality is that there are people who don’t drink enough fluids—some are just less active and may be less inclined to drink regularly. However, water isn’t the only beverage that can hydrate you. Teas are also a great option for hydration, and immunity as well. We asked Laura Burak, MS, RD, founder of GetNaked® Nutrition and author of Slimdown with Smoothies, what her favorite tea is for immune support—especially in the colder times of year.
First of all, have you ever wondered why people get sicker when it’s cold outside? “The winter months mean staying indoors more often, so if the past two years told you anything about risk of catching a virus when you're indoors vs. outdoors, then you know that being in close quarters inside is more likely to spread germs and give your immune system some extra work to do.” Burak says. Also, people tend to make unhealthy choices when it’s cold outside, in terms of both diet and lifestyle. “You may be eating more warming comforting foods in the winter instead of fresh produce, so make sure to still include enough fruits and veggies because they're packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to boost your immunity.”
If you're looking for a healthy morning drink, opt for an herbal tea so that you can nourish your body. Burak shared the best herbal tea to get the best bang for your buck. “ Green tea is one of my top picks for a morning beverage because it not only gives you that hit of caffeine, but it is an antioxidant and polyphenol-rich plant.” Polyphenols are plant compounds that can reduce inflammation, and in turn protect against chronic diseases like cancer. Inflammation can force your immune system to work extra hard and in turn make it weaker. Getting your inflammation under control allows your immune system to focus on its main job, which is fighting illness.
Health Benefits Of Drinking Green Tea
Green tea has a number of benefits in the body. “When consumed consistently as part of a healthy diet, [it] can help boost your immunity, protect against chronic diseases like cancers and heart disease, and aid in brain health.” Burak adds. Try drinking it in the morning for a caffeine boost and warmup that won’t dehydrate you like coffee. If you don’t like the taste, try adding honey for a sweeter flavor.
It’s true that your immune system takes a hit during the colder months, due to things like abrupt weather change, less movement, and more indoor activity close to other people. However, there are ways to invest in your health so that you can avoid unwanted symptoms. Making sure you’re eating a balanced, nutritious diet, and staying hydrated by drinking lots of water and herbal tea, are the best ways to boost your immunity and feel your best all year round.
