You’ve spent the last few months running a few extra miles each week and torturing yourself (in the best possible way) with crunches and planks. Don’t let your hard work and the effort you put in to look and feel healthy this summer be thwarted by one breakfast choice. Before you sit down to enjoy the most important meal of the day, be aware that there’s one breakfast meal that can bring on the bloat — which is the last thing you’ll want on the morning of a beach day.
Pastries And Other Refined Carbs
You may think that, by skipping salt and heading straight for a typical carb-filled breakfast, you’re avoiding the sodium that we have come to associate with stomach bloating. While that’s half true, there’s another side to the story. Sweet pastries and other refined carb sources like croissants, muffins, and waffles are stored in your body as sugar and all of that sugar forces you to retain water. When you retain water, it can show — and bloating is the number one sign.
Eat This Instead
Of course, hitting the beach in your smallest swimsuit doesn’t mean skipping breakfast (which is actually one of the worst things you can do). Instead, fight belly bloat with breakfast foods like Greek yogurt, which are rich in probiotics and helps your digestive system run properly, which prevents gas and bloating. Add a few berries, walnuts, and chia seeds for good measure and you’ll feel and look your beach best.
