Eating out at a restaurant is a great way to spend time with loved ones, enjoy a new environment, and try delicious new foods. However, if you’re trying to lose weight, it can be difficult to know what to order in order to stay on track with your health goals. And appetizers are typically some of the worst options out there. From mozzarella sticks to onion rings and other fried, fattening foods, you may feel like you’re better off skipping apps altogether. However, there are several healthy choices out there that many restaurants are likely to have on the menu.

To discover the best weight loss-friendly appetizer option that you can order next time you’re out for dinner, we checked in with nutritionist Lisa Richards, creator of The Candida Diet. She told us that a hummus platter is always a fantastic choice. Learn more about the benefits of this tasty yet healthy treat below.

When you want to start with something for the table before you get your meals, but you don't want to put your waistline at risk, Richards says a hummus platter is always a safe bet. Not only is it free of the saturated fats typically found in fried appetizers, but it actually offers its fair share of health benefits, too.

"Ordering a veggie and hummus platter as a healthy appetizer for weight loss offers several benefits," she says. "Vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber, which helps promote satiety and reduces overall calorie intake." Fiber is a crucial part of a balanced diet for several reasons, but the benefits of veggies don't stop there. "They are also packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health," Richards says.

We probably don't have to tell you twice that vegetables are good for you. But even hummus itself is a great choice for your health! "Hummus, made from chickpeas, adds protein and healthy fats to the platter, further enhancing its nutritional value," Richards goes on. "Protein and healthy fats help increase satiety, stabilize blood sugar levels, and provide sustained energy." Perfect.

So, there you have it: an appetizer doesn't have to put your weight loss goals in jeopardy. "By choosing this appetizer, you avoid the excess calories and unhealthy fats typically found in many other appetizer options. The combination of vegetables and hummus provides a variety of flavors and textures, making it a satisfying and enjoyable choice," Richards concludes.
