Eating an anti-inflammatory diet has a multitude of health benefits. To start, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer’s have all been linked to chronic inflammation. Additionally, when combined with a natural food diet, it can help manage weight gain and even mood. And experts agree that the most important meal of the day–breakfast–is a great time to incorporate these foods. Here’s what they said you should be adding to your breakfast every day:
Alessandra Kessler, certified holistic health coach and founder of Health Body Healthy Mind: "To start off your day with the right kind of anti-inflammatory diet, I’d suggest you to start with a protein-rich breakfast." She suggests an egg-white omelette that has fresh vegetables in it such as spinach and peppers or probiotic yogurts which include fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and cherries.
Alena Kharlamenko, MS, RDN: "If you aren't already, you should definitely add turmeric to your breakfast. Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory properties and helps protect your body from the damaging effects of harmful toxins called free radicals. Just make sure to eat turmeric with black pepper, which helps you absorb it much better. Enjoy turmeric in your tea, oatmeal, or even sprinkle it in your yogurt bowl!"
Serena Poon, CN, CHC, CHN: "My one favorite anti-inflammatory ingredient is avocado!"
Sofia Norton, registered dietitian, of Kiss My Keto: "I suggest flaxseed meal. Flaxseeds are one of the richest sources of plant omega-3 fatty acids (specifically, alpha-linolenic acid or ALA). A tbsp provides almost 1600 mg of ALA, omega-3s that have proven anti-inflammatory properties. Their ability to reduce systemic inflammation could help prevent cardiovascular diseases and other health problems."
Amie Valpone, HHC, AADP, Lycored Ambassador: "Tomatoes are rich in antioxidants such as lycopene, a carotenoid red pigment, that’s well known for its anti-aging and anti-inflammatory benefits. They’re also off the charts for the amount of phytonutrients they contain. Tomatoes are an excellent source of beta-carotene and vitamin C, both of which are key for beautiful, youthful skin. Any variety is beneficial- from grape tomatoes to cherry tomatoes to Roma tomatoes, you’ll reap the benefits in every bite."
