If you are worried about weight gain, paying close attention to the toppings and condiments you use regularly is a good idea. Although you can incorporate most foods into a healthy diet in moderation, certain condiments pack in calories and fat, which make even small portions a bad idea for weight loss.

Specifically, mayonnaise is one of the worst condiments you can use; even one tablespoon has almost 100 calories. Keep reading for everything else you need to know about this condiment–and what you can eat instead!

Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is a popular condiment, and shows up in a lot of recipes and sandwiches. However, it is one of the worst condiments you could choose for weight loss.

With 94 calories and 10 grams of fat per tablespoon, mayonnaise can lead to serious weight gain if you are not careful.

Despite being full of calories, mayonnaise offers little nutritional value, lacking protein and fiber. Condiments with empty calories can contribute to weight gain.

According to Healthline, "When it comes to food, empty means that that food contains little or no essential vitamins or minerals. In other words, these foods [with empty calories] provide nothing of value to your body beyond calories that create excess pounds."

Limiting the amount of empty calories you eat is a good idea; instead, focus on eating nutrient-rich calories that will keep you full for longer.

With that in mind, restricting the amount of mayonnaise in your diet is a smart way to prevent weight gain.

If you have the idea of a dry sandwich, consider other condiments and spreads instead. Depending on what you are making, healthier options include hummus, mustard, tzatziki, and guacamole.
