Hair loss is a common problem for men and women, and it can be the result of multiple factors–from genetics to scalp irritation. With that in mind, if you are experiencing thinning hair or even hair loss, it’s a good idea to speak to a dermatologist (or a trichologist, a hair loss expert) and eliminate any hair products that might be negatively impacting your hair and scalp health.
With that in mind, keep reading for the one conditioner you should never use if you have thinning hair!
Fragrance
Sticking to fragrance-free hair products is a good idea if you are experiencing any hair thinning or loss--and especially if you have a sensitive scalp.
The blanket term "fragrance" on a shampoo or conditioner bottle can mean many different things, including artificial chemicals that can dry out your hair and irritate your scalp, both of which contribute to hair loss.
According to Nutrafol, "Products that have 'fragrance' on their label can contain thousands of hidden chemicals."
With that in mind, eliminating these products from your haircare routine is a good start in taking better care of your scalp and hair health.
That's not all. "Fragrance" can have a negative impact on your healthy overall. The article continues, "Some ingredients in fragranced cosmetic products can disrupt the reproductive system and cause cancer or asthma."
Plus, according to HuffPost, the dangers don't stop there.
"Environmental Working Group (EWG) researchers found more than 75 percent of products listing the ingredient “fragrance” contained phthalates (THAL-ates) which have been shown to disrupt hormone activity, reduce sperm counts, and cause reproductive malformation, and have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, studies by Dr. Philip J. Landrigan of the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center, link fetal exposure with autism, ADHD, and neurological disorders," the article explains.
With that in mind, if you are experiencing thinning hair, eliminating any conditioners with "fragrance" is a smart first step in protecting your health overall as well as the health of your scalp and hair.
