It’s no secret that a well-balanced diet needs to include nutritional whole foods. And while we can typically make a running list in our heads to categorize healthy foods from unhealthy foods, there are some grey areas that remain unclear. There are some seemingly healthy foods that may have nutritional setbacks, and yes, even fruit can be one of them.
In fact, there’s one fruit you should stop buying at the grocery store ASAP due to ingredients that lurk inside of them. Although most fruits can be easily added to your daily meals due to their amazing benefits, some types of fruit aren’t as healthy as you think they are. We’ll let an expert explain why.
According to registered dietitian, Leah Van Dolder, one fruit you should avoid buying is canned fruit in syrup.
“Why? Added sugar! Fruit already has naturally occurring fruit sugars, so avoiding canned varieties in syrup is a way to get the benefits of fruit without the added sugar,” Van Dolder explains. “The good news is there are canned fruits available in water. Opt for this option if you enjoy canned fruit.”
Speaking of sugar-loaded fruits, fruit cocktails are often actually two servings of fruit in one container. Van Dolder also recommends not buying fruit cocktails on a regular basis.
Simply put, “Fruit cocktails are often loaded with added sugar and aren't nearly as good for us nutritionally,” Van Dolder says. “The ‘fruit’ in cocktails is stripped of fiber and a lot of nutrients. Opt for the whole fruit first or look for 100% fruit juice.” Duly noted!
