Even the healthiest eaters find themselves at the golden arches at some point in their life. Whether you’re on a road trip and it’s the only place to eat for miles, or you’re busy a mom that just needs a quick meal for the kids, there are countless situations where you might find yourself at McDonald’s, trying your best to navigate the menu and order the least-fattening item. Well, have no fear—nutritionists are here to help.
We spoke to Nutritionist Isla Zyair of Obesity Controller to discover the healthiest meal you can order next time you’re stopping at the McDonald’s drive-through. She told us the Southwest Grilled Chicken salad is your best bet for a low-fat (or at least lower fat) option.
Southwest Grilled Chicken Salad
While many fast food salads have some sneaky downsides, Zyair says the Southwest Grilled Chicken Salad from McDonald's is likely the healthiest thing on the menu. This salad is packed with nutritious ingredients like all-white flesh chicken fillets, baby kale, tomatoes, kidney beans, and corn. Yum!
"This meal is a good source of protein and fiber," Zyair explains, adding that it's also "low in saturated fat and calories," which is a rare feat compared to many other fast food menu items—especially when it comes to McDonald's. A whole salad comes in at just 320 calories, 15 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat, and 0 trans fats.
It should also be noted that the calories and fat content can be lowered even more if you leave out the dressing all together or stick with using just a half packet. It's also a good idea to opt for the Southwest vinaigrette over the more fattening ranch and Caesar options. Additionally, if you want to cut down on sodium or make this meal vegetarian, you can always modify this salad by ordering it without the chicken. "You may always make it healthier by further customizing it to include other vegetables, making it an even more nutritious option," Zyair suggests. Overall, Zyair notes that the Soutwest Salad is "tasty and healthier than most hamburgers and chicken sandwiches."
So, if you're trying to stay health-conscious, you don't necessarily have to cut out fast food altogether (although it's a good idea to cut back as much as possible). Moderation, smart decisions, and modifications are always key! Next time you find yourself at McDonald's, just steer clear of a fat-loaded double cheeseburger and fries and keep your eye on the prize: a salad.
