It’s no secret that spices and seasonings add a ton of flavor to just about any meal. While these seasonings are the perfect garnishes to your healthy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, they can sometimes be harmful to your gut when they’re used excessively.

When you think of your everyday spices and seasonings you probably start thinking about traditional salt and pepper. Those two are definitely essentials that everyone has in their kitchens.

In fact, there’s one specific popular seasoning that slows down your metabolism. You should definitely think twice before adding it to your next meal.

The one seasoning you should get rid of ASAP because it destroys your metabolism is sea salt. According to Eat This, Not That!, your favorite sea salt doesn’t have as much iodine in it as regular table salt does. Iodine is a micronutrient that your thyroid, a metabolism-regulating gland, needs to function properly.

Salt isn’t the best thing for your healthy diet, generally speaking. Let’s face it, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Americans eat way more salt than the recommended amount. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day when Americans actually tend to eat about 3,400 mg everyday. Yikes! Health experts are endlessly studying the connection between sodium found in salt and unwanted weight gain.

According to a Livestrong article reviewed by registered dietitian Claudia Thompson, there is a direct link between sodium intake and temporary water weight gain. If you’ve eaten particularly salty food then you shouldn’t be surprised when you feel bloated later on in the day. Such salty foods may also make you even hungrier, which can lead to overeating and potential weight gain in the long run.
