We know that there are plenty of products that can help clear acne and deliver flawless skin, but did you know that supplements can also assist in your clear skin efforts, too? Taking a daily supplement is a great way to give your body an extra boost in vitamins and minerals, which are things that you could be deficient in and could be causing your breakouts.
Not sure where to start? Dermatologists say that those who suffer from acne could benefit from taking a daily probiotic supplement. You might know them for their role in improving digestion health, but research now shows that skin prone to acne or rosacea has shown improvement with daily probiotic use.
“While more studies are needed to identify the most beneficial aspects of probiotics and determine whether topical or oral probiotics yield the best results, I think we can expect to see some cutting-edge probiotic products for acne and rosacea in the near future,” Dr. Whitney P. Bowe, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, says.
Though taking an oral probiotic supplement is a good place to start, Dr. Bowe also suggests slowly introducing probiotic-rich foods into your diet to see improvement in your skin.
“I would recommend that patients with acne or rosacea see their dermatologist to talk about adding foods with live active cultures, such as yogurt, to their diets or taking an oral probiotic supplement daily,” she continues. “Although I don’t envision probiotics ever being used as a stand-alone treatment for acne or rosacea, they could be used as an effective combination therapy with prescription medications or over-the-counter topical treatments.”
