It’s no secret that we all like and crave a little extra flavor in our meals and drinks every now and then.

While spices and herbs give food an added zest that satisfies your taste buds and can also offer nutritional benefits, there’s not much you can do for your drinks besides sweeteners.

Sweeteners are often added to popular drinks like coffees and teas. However, there’s one sweetener you should avoid ASAP, according to experts, and we’ll tell you why.

Let’s face it, artificial sweeteners aren’t great for you. According to the Cleveland Clinic, artificial sweeteners may be associated with changes in gut bacteria and can also lead to increased fat storage. Yikes!

Although many artificial sweeteners have few, if any, calories, they are often much sweeter than their traditional counterparts. These super sugary sweeteners often lead you to crave more sweet things and can be detrimental to your overall health.

In an interview with Eat This, Not That!, health coach Dr. Oreoluwa Ogunyemi explains how the consumption of artificial sweeteners can lead to overeating and other scary health issues.

“This can lead to us to eat more calories than we would if we skipped the artificial sweetener and increases our risk of packing on the pounds around our midsection, which increases our risk for heart disease and heart attacks,” Ogunyemi reveals. Duly noted!
