Grabbing an iced coffee or cold brew at your favorite coffee shop is one of the many perks of summer, but before you start adding packs of artificial sweetener to yours, learn the truth about the dangers of these low-sugar options. They’re worse than you think!

Experts warn that you may be adding artificial sweeteners to ice coffee without knowing the possible consequences to your health. While the no-calorie content is appealing, you may actually be doing more harm than good. Here’s everything you need to know:

Adding Artificial Sweeteners

“Although they may not contain calories, some studies have shown a correlation between people who consume these sweeteners and people who consume more processed foods with artificial ingredients,” registered dietitian Rachel McBryan, RD, tells us.

One study at the University of Texas San Antonio found that a group of people who consumed diet soda with artificial sweetener were more likely to gain weight than the group with natural sweeteners, she warns. Yikes!

So, what should you have instead? “When making your coffee, try to instead use less sugar and natural sweeteners in your coffee like honey or agave.” Good tip!
