It’s no surprise that we all need breakfast in a pinch every now and then. While fast food restaurants, like Wendy’s, offer affordable and quick ways to get an easy morning meal, they certainly don’t have the healthiest menu items available.
It’s time to choose fresh whole foods in the morning for breakfast and steer clear from the tempting drive-thrus.
In fact, health experts say there’s one Wendy’s breakfast you shouldn’t order because of the health risks that lurk in the ingredients.
According to registered dietitian and nutritionist Julie Mancuso of JM Nutrition, the one breakfast you shouldn’t order at Wendy’s is the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit Combo meal.
The combo meal includes the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit sandwich, seasoned potato wedges, and a fountain soda.
“In a nutshell, this breakfast item is a triple whammy,” Mancuso says. “By that I mean it’s made up of the 3 most highly palatable, unhealthy and addictive ingredients: salt, fat (saturated) and sugar.”
This menu item can contain up to 1,060 calories in total and Mancuso warns that while the daily recommended intake of calories varies based on age, gender, and activity levels, the range for women is 1,600-2,400 calories per day, according to the U.S. Department of Health.
“Given these figures, a breakfast item should never constitute up to a half or more of the daily calories intake. Doing so can easily lead to caloric overconsumption, particularly when most of us typically consume lunches and dinners with even higher caloric loads,” Mancuso explains.
It’s key to choose food in the morning that will kickstart your day and keep you energized.
“The goal of breakfast is to fuel the body for the rigors of the day, supplying us with the required long-lasting energy to be as productive as possible, avoiding energy dips and slumps,” Mancuso says. “This breakfast concoction, however, does the exact opposite.”
