The Scary Reason You Should Never Add This Sauce To Your Eggs

If you are starting your morning with eggs, you are off to a healthy start. Eggs are a great source of protein, and can help you stay full throughout the morning–making it easier to stick to a diet. However, some toppings that people regularly put on eggs can actually take away from these health benefits.

Specifically, if you regularly add ketchup to your eggs, it can become a real barrier to weight loss.

Ketchup might not seem like it's too unhealthy, especially considering it comes from tomatoes. However, it can add a lot of sugar, salt, and calories to your meal.

According to Popsugar, "Ketchup is fairly high in sugar, nearly four grams of sugar per tablespoon (and many of us use a lot more than one tablespoon!). This can add up quickly in terms of calories and added sugar in an entire meal, especially when considering this is just the condiment."

The Food Network explains, "Two ingredients of concern in ketchup are salt and sugar. Per tablespoon, ketchup contains 4 grams of sugar and 190 milligrams of sodium."

Plus, this salt and sugar is added to the ketchup.

"Although 4 grams of sugar doesn’t seem like a lot, much of it comes from added sugar, as opposed to the natural sugar found in tomatoes. The same goes for the added salt: consuming 8 tablespoons of ketchup will have you reaching your sodium needs for the entire day, so if you like to pour on the red stuff, it's easy to overload on sodium," the Food Network explains.

With that in mind, if you are covering your eggs in ketchup, it might be a good idea to start keeping this high sodium and high sugar topping in moderation.
