If you want to avoid weight gain, making sure that you have a healthy diet is important. Specifically, it’s a good idea to re-think some foods you might have thought were healthy, but can actually be high in calories, sugar, and fat. These seemingly healthy foods, especially if they are baked goods, can put a dent in an otherwise healthy diet and lead to weight gain.
With that in mind, keep reading for the one unexpected breakfast food you should cut out right away.
Muffins
Although you might think that a muffin could be a healthy breakfast choice--especially if it has fruit in it--the reality is that they pack in a ton of calories, fat, and sugar.
In fact, many store brought brands have as much as 400 calories per muffin. Additionally, since most muffins are made from refined flour and sugar, most of these calories are empty.
Depending on the muffin flavor, there could be even more sugar and calories. The added ingredients in popular flavors like blueberry or chocolate chip add more unwanted calories.
Plus, according to Healthline, most muffins are too big: "[C]ommercially sold muffins are often very large. One review found that a typical packaged muffin exceeds the USDA standard portion size by 333%."
With that in mind, you should definitely start skipping store bought muffins. If you are looking for the occasional sweet treat, try making a healthy muffin recipe at home. This one uses whole wheat flour and maple syrup (or honey).
