It’s no secret that navigating the best foods to eat while on a diet is not an easy task. Of course some foods raise a big red flag in your mind and you know better than to eat them, but what about the foods you’ve been led to believe are healthy and good for you?

There are many different “clean foods” that aren’t as healthy as you think they are. While anything you eat should be done so in moderation, even some of your go-to diet meals and snacks secretly have lots of unwanted ingredients in them.

It’s always key to start your day off on the right foot in terms of meals when you’re on a diet. So, let’s dive into the healthy breakfasts you make in hopes of achieving weight loss. In a busy a.m. rush you probably reach for eggs, fruits, and even yogurt for a quick on-the-go morning meal. We’ve got a tip: it’s time to rethink your usual yogurt granola bowl.

Say it ain’t so-- even low-fat yogurt can be detrimental to your diet! According to Healthline, many low-fat yogurts are loaded with added sugars that can lead to weight gain. The website reveals that sugar is oftentimes added to enhance flavor in low-fat products. Healthline explains that you’re actually better off sticking to full-fat yogurt because studies show that women who contain high-fat dairy products gained less weight than women who choose sugary low-fat options.

It’s also key to stick to plain yogurts or Greek yogurts instead of sugary fruity yogurts. Greek yogurts contain about 17 grams of protein, which helps you feel satisfied and prevents you from reaching for another quick snack to fill you up. Plain or Greek yogurts are also a safe option considering many yogurts contain unwanted calories and sugar.

If you’re really in the mood for a fruity flavor in your morning parfait then we recommend adding fresh fruit such as sliced strawberries or blueberries to your yogurt. We all know that a common yogurt bowl ingredient is granola, of course. However, you need to be extra careful when adding the crunchy ingredient to your bowl.

Granola can be healthy if you choose a product without extra sugar flavoring. Registered Dietitian Dawn Orsaeo explains to Shape that some companies add honey or chocolate to granola which adds a lot of sugar to it, outweighing the usual nutritional benefits of granola. Granola is typically calorie-dense and high in both protein and fiber, which makes an unsweetened granola ideal for weight loss. So remember: stick to plain yogurt with fresh fruit and natural granola for the weight loss results you've been waiting for.
