Consider it the Bella Hadid look that launched thousands of followers: foxy eyebrows. Even if you’re not familiar with the viral beauty term, you’ve no doubt confronted some version of the look on social media, whether you’ve come across photos of Bella, Megan Fox, or Kendall Jenner sporting it (of course there’s a filter to recreate it in your own pics because there’s a filter for everything). Foxy eyes are eyes that appear dramatically upturned at the outer corner, with eyebrows that appear higher on the face. The look mimics an actual upper facelift, without the downtime or cost of a facelift. And, in many cases (celebs especially), foxy eyes is an aesthetic that is achieved using Botox, PDO threat lifts, or even a blepharoplasty, where the excess skin is removed from the patient’s eyelid to create an overall different eye shape. “The “foxy eye” eyebrow hack helps to create an illusion of lifted, more youthful-looking eyes by elongating the eye shape and emphasizing the outer corners of the eyes,” says Certified MUA & Cosmetologist Madeline Hall. “This technique can help to create a more dramatic and sultry eye makeup look.”
A similar effect can be achieved without needles or surgery. If you’ve been eyeing this trend since it first popped up a few years ago and wonder what it would look like on you, this is the foxy eye eyebrow hack you need to try.
Makeup tips for foxy eyebrows
To achieve the "foxy eye" eyebrow hack, Hall says you will need an eyebrow pencil or pomade in a shade that matches your natural eyebrow color. You will also need a concealer that is one to two shades lighter than your skin tone and a small, angled brush to create the winged shape.
“To begin, start by filling in your eyebrows as usual, but extend the tail of your eyebrow outwards towards the temple,” Hall instructs. “Then, using the angled brush and concealer, create a sharp line from the outer corner of your eye up towards the end of your eyebrow. Blend the concealer outwards to create a smooth transition between the eyebrow and the winged liner effect. This will give the illusion of a lifted eye shape.”
Any downsides to this look you should know about?
One downside to the "foxy eye" eyebrow hack is that it may not be suitable for all eye shapes, Hall warns. “Additionally, if done incorrectly, this technique can look unnatural or overdone,” she says. “It's important to practice and perfect the technique to avoid any mistakes. Also, it may not be appropriate for all occasions, as it is a more dramatic and noticeable makeup look.”
And one last note about the look if you’re thinking of asking a plastic surgeon to give you something less temporary than makeup: there have been a number of people who have complained about the outcome of their foxy eye procedure. There are risks involved that can include swelling, bruising, misplacement of threads, and uneven brows. It’s also worth noting that trends come and go. Playing with the foxy eye look using makeup may be the safer, no-regrets way to go.
