7 Things You NEED To Know Before Ordering Food At McDonald’s, According To An Employee

November 24, 2017 by Emily Belfiore

McDonald's is home to some of the most iconic fast food items, making it one of the most popular restaurants in the world. From their burgers and fries to their McCafe drinks and McFlurries, there are so many delicious items to choose from. But, there are some things that most customers don't know about their favorite chain, including how their go-to orders are prepared...

Here are the things employees say you NEED to know before you order food at McDonald's.

The Fish Fillet Sandwich Is Rarely Served Fresh

"I used to work at McDonald's. Don't order our fish patties," a former employee warned customers on Reddit. "No one ever does and I swear some days we'd make a batch and it would sit there all day until someone ordered some."

Some Eggs Are Made With Preservatives

McDonald's has taken strides to improve the quality of its food, especially when it comes to their breakfast menu. But, the chain's folded and scrambled eggs are still made with preservatives. "Its scrambled egg includes sodium acid pyrophosphate, citric acid and monosodium phosphate to preserve the egg's color and a separate preservative," according to CNBC. "Meanwhile, its folded eggs ingredient list with items used to enhance the color, texture and flavor is long too..."

Your Chicken McNuggets Are Usually Sitting In The Heater All Day

“I used to work at McDonalds. If you order, especially chicken nuggets, just ask for them fresh. Otherwise they’ve been just sitting in their container in the heat," a former Mickey D's employee said, according to Huffington Post. "They have a timer, but 9/10 times when that timer goes off, people just reset the timer instead of making new ones. This could go on until all the nuggets are sold.”

The McFlurry Machine Isn't Really Broken...

McDonald's has been getting a bad rep lately for its broken McFlurry machines, which always seem to be out of order no matter which location you're at. But, former employee Becca Jansen says that the machines are "broken" because the staff doesn't want to take the time to clean them. "They probably say they can't make [a McFlurry] because the machine is cleaning," she told Seventeen.com. "If they say it's broken, it's probably because they cleaned it already so they're making an excuse that the customer will understand."

The Grilled Chicken Patty Is Grosser Than You'd Think

When asked what menu item customers should never buy, a former employee replied, “Don't order... the grilled chicken. It's horrible frozen chicken that we defrost and steam and it's a bit gelatinous," according to Eat This, Not That! Yikes!

Don't Order Anything McCafe

"I work for McDonald’s and make sure everyone that matters to me never orders anything that comes out of the McCafe machine, as these are routinely neglected in practically all the McDonalds," an employee said, according to Huffington Post. "All McCafe beverages run through a horrifically dirty machine -- we’re talking 5+ inches of uncleaned, liquid making up its inside parts."

Don't Order An Egg McMuffin Without Bacon

Employees urge customers not to variate their Egg McMuffin order, as this could result in them being overcharged. Instead, one employee suggests ordering an Egg and Cheese Muffin if you don't want Canadian Bacon to be kinder to your wallet. "If you want an Egg McMuffin with no Canadian bacon, ask for an Egg and Cheese Muffin. There is a button for the Egg and Cheese Muffin and it's $1.69 vs $3.49 for an Egg McMuffin," says Reddit user Terribly_Good in an AMA thread.
