Is there anyone in the world who hasn’t felt like they’ve made a drastic hair mistake (or four) in their lives? Hair can be so fickle, and cutting just a few too many layers or not enough is all it takes to dramatically change the way your hair makes you look. If you are over 50, there’s a chance you’ve seen your hair undergo changes that can include it become thinner or changing texture so that it feels and looks more dry. Now is the perfect time to get a handle on the mistakes you feel you could be making with your hair so that you find a look that works perfectly for you.

Hair Expert Justin Hickox says he has learned a lot during his 30-year tenure as a hair professional. Using one woman’s hair troubles and complaints as an example, Hickox sets off pointing out some of the biggest hair mistakes we are making and how to correct them.

You may be familiar with some of these mistakes because they’re all-too common. Here are the problems and solutions that will help your hair look its best.

1. Mistake: Hair That’s Too Long

It can be difficult to let go of the idea that your hair should be a certain length, whether that means down to your waist or just below your shoulders. But if you’re noticing that your hair gets thin at the ends whenever its length exceeds a certain point, it probably isn’t your imagination. Hickox recommends cutting it to remove these straggly ends so that you can find the length that makes your hair look its healthy best. This mistake can also go hand-in-hand with mistake number two.

2. Mistake: Hair is Too Layered At the Bottom

There is such a thing as too many layers (too much of a good thing). Layers serve a purpose: to create movement and texture in your hair. They can also give thinner hair the appearance of more volume. But if your hair has too many layers, especially at the bottom of your hair, it can have the opposite effect and give strands a straggly look. If your hair is very layered at the bottom and this isn’t serving you, consider cutting it into a more blunt line that can make hair look denser at the bottom.

3. Mistake: Top Layers Are too Long

Yet another mistake with layering: the top layers of your hair should not be so long that they cause your hair to sit there flat at the root. This will cause layering to look bunched up at the ends of your hair, and won’t contribute anything to your overall haircut or add more volume to your hair. To help your hair look less heavy, lighten the layers on the top by making them shorter. This can also help draw the eye upward so that you feel like your face appears more lifted.

4. Mistake: Not Enough Layering in the Front

The magic of layering is that it can be used to frame the face and highlight facial features. Even if you aren’t into bangs or curtain bangs, layering can create a drape around the face that opens up your face and helps soften your look.
